Review of Nebulus for C64 by Brad

BradAhhhhh, a sexy wee pig-goblin-bird-thing climbing up an ever sinking tower avoiding bubbles, fire, magic and all other means of horrid nasties.... Pure frikkin' genius.

For the concept originality alone this scores extremely high on my scale of yummy creations, and the graphic implementation is second to none. Not since I first laid eyes on Encounter for the c64 had I been so mesmerized by an 8bit graphics system. But rather than break-neck speeds instead here we have this rotating cylinder where objects appear to be moving around it in a psudeo 3d sense of world wrapping.

Cute and wonderful is our Nebulus, and the Amiga version is virtually identical except of course the fact it has about 4080 colors more than the c64, mostly put to good use in copper graduations for the background.

'Nebulus' on the 'c64' - climbing the towers! The water rises (or the tower sinks, depending on what sort of brain you have) and so to does the action, bopping and dodging and shooting and running your way to the top, so you can do it all over again. Ah the life of a Nebulus, another fantastic title from Hewson, my second favourite house after Gremlin Graphics (as sexy as Neb may be, he can't really compete with Thing or Monty).

Presentation92%
I've always been fairly impressed with Hewsons packaging, Nebulus had nice cover art and the game is quite swish.

Graphics96%
It might seem simple to some, but i found the graphics in Nebulus to be quite clever, fresh and well drawn.

Sound74%
The game had nice sound but i was never a great fan of the tunes on Nebulus, other Hewson games had far better music

Hookability98%
I don't believe its possible to NOT get hooked on Nebulus. Its the veil of simplicity that gives great confidence when playing this game - then complete and utter confusion as to how that ball managed to knock you down 3 flights and into the water... so you just KNOW you can get it right next time. Fan-bloody-tastic!

Lastability86%
Eventually you'll hurl your c64 or emulator through a window, but of course you'll spend all night repairing it so that you can remember to shoot the bouncing bubble next time.

Quality for Age99%
They just don't make em like they use to. Why not a Nebulus CS map?

Overall93%
Groundbreaking stuff, plug in your C64HDTV/Emulator etc - and see if you don't get trapped for an hour or three.
